Tonight, Linesman Travis Toomey from Leduc, Alberta will be working his first NHL Regular Season game in Anaheim, CA when the Arizona Coyotes visit the Ducks. He will be joined on the ice by referees Marc Joannette and Brian Pochmara and will be working alongside Brandon Gawryletz on the lines.
The NHLOA and its members would like to congratulate Travis on his first NHL game and wish him a long and successful career.
Travis, like most Canadian kids of his era, grew up dreaming of being an NHL player. The Leduc, Alberta native played 5 years in the Western Hockey League (WHL) spending 4 seasons with the Saskatoon Blades before finishing his final campaign with the Seattle Thunderbirds. After his junior days, the former centreman decided to take advantage of the WHL scholarship program and joined the University of Alberta. Toomey played 4 seasons for the Golden Bears from 2011 - 2015, capturing an impressive 3 Canada West titles and winning back to back CIS National Championships in 14’ & 15’. During his time as a player, in an effort to improve his skating ability, Toomey attended Serdachny Powerskating Camps. He eventually joined the company, working in the summers through university, before taking a full time position as a skating coach after graduating with his Kinesiology degree in 2015. This is where his officiating journey started. His first strides with a zebra’s jersey were made while working at the powerskating camps, officiating 3 on 3 games. He immediately fell in love with the feeling of being back on the ice during hockey games. In the fall of 2017 he started working minor hockey as a linesman in his hometown of Leduc, reaching the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) that same year. In the summer of 2018 Toomey attended the NHL Officiating Combine, where his efforts earned him work in the AHL and WHL in addition to the AJHL for the 2018/19 season. He was selected to work playoffs in all 3 leagues that year, including the final game of the National Junior A Championship. That summer Travis was offered a minor league linesman contract with the National Hockey League.
