Lou Maschio

The rule of hockey was always Lou’s passion. For forty-five years he was involved in officiating in a variety of capacities.

He started his career in minor hockey in 1947.

Lou was a founding member of the Guelph Referees Association which was formed in 1949.

In 1951 he started officiating-in the OHA junior and senior circuits.

He spent the 1957 and 1958 seasons refereeing in the NHL and AHL.

In 1962 he was selected to officiate the World Hockey Championship in Colorado Springs and in 1964 the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria.

He was an OHA Referee and Supervisor of Officials until 1972.

1972 to 1992 he was a Supervisor of Officials, Scout and mentor in the NHL.

In 1995 he was inducted into the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame.

Lou Maschio was a quiet, dedicated family man. He was well respected in the hockey community and helped many young men get their start in officiating.
