Biography
Russ Bowie (August 24, 1880 – April 8, 1959) was one of the most dominant goal scorers of early hockey and a standout amateur during the pre-NHL era. Playing for the Montreal Victorias from 1899 to 1909, he led his league in goals five times and averaged nearly three goals per game — a feat matched only by Frank McGee. Known for his integrity, Bowie refused all offers to turn professional, proudly maintaining his amateur status throughout his career. After retiring as a player in 1909, he continued to serve the game as a referee in the National Hockey Association. Bowie was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947.
