Zebras Care
The National Hockey League Officials Association has a charitable organization called “Zebras Care”
Once again this season, our Zebras Care Foundation is back
In our quest to bring joy to children across North America and to grow the great game of hockey, the Zebras Care charity was formed to provide an opportunity for underprivileged and sick children to visit with many of our NHLOA members and to attend a National Hockey League game in person.
Since its creation in 2007, hundreds of kids have enjoyed the pre-game officials dressing room visits where they get to meet the game’s on-ice officials and spend some quality time with them. The visits cover topics including rules, general hockey knowledge and the path to the NHL for the officials present. Learning what goes on behind the scenes can be fascinating to the visitors and highlights include taking a picture from ice level or with a Zamboni, and some lucky kids even got to sit in the penalty box. These room visits are cherished just as much by the officials as the kids who are visiting.
In addition to the pre-game dressing room visits, NHLOA members have also been part of many other initiatives, including hosting amateur officials from Hockey Canada and USA Hockey. More recently we have had the distinct honor of hosting the families of fallen heroes through the TAPS foundation.
A special thanks to the Community Relations departments from the NHL and the teams that help in the coordination of the visits.
