Biography

Scotty Morrison is a former National Hockey League (NHL) referee and executive, and a past president and chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

A native of Quebec, Morrison played junior hockey before turning to officiating, working games in both junior and senior amateur leagues. He later moved to Vancouver to join the Western Hockey League (WHL), where his strong performance earned him a call from the NHL at age 24—making him the youngest referee in league history at the time.

After leaving the NHL in 1955, Morrison became referee-in-chief of the WHL while continuing to officiate games. He also pursued a career in sales, which brought him to Toronto in 1964. A year later, in June 1965, he returned to the NHL as referee-in-chief, a role that later evolved into vice-president of officiating in 1981.

In 1986, Morrison transitioned to become the NHL’s vice-president of project development and was assigned to the Hockey Hall of Fame, where he was appointed president. Under his leadership, the Hall of Fame successfully relocated from Exhibition Place to its current home in downtown Toronto. He later served as chairman of the Hall beginning in 1991 and retired in 1998.

Morrison was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder category in 1999, received the Wayne Gretzky International Award in 2001, and was named a Stanley Cup trustee in 2002.
